Electrical Engineering for Rebels
Everyone tells you to follow the schematic. They tell you to respect the datasheet. They tell you to use proper wiring practices.
I'm here to tell you that sometimes, you should ignore all of that.
When to Break the Rules
Rule #1: Always use the recommended resistor value
When to break it: When you want that LED to be BRIGHT. Like, "could be used as a landing strip" bright.
Rule #2: Never power a circuit directly from mains
When to break it: When you're in a hurry and have a good understanding of your life insurance policy.
Rule #3: Always use proper grounding
When to break it: When you enjoy the smell of ozone and the thrill of uncertainty.
The Reality
Look, I'm kidding (mostly). But there's something to be said for understanding WHY the rules exist before you break them. I've spent years learning electrical engineering the "right" way, and now I can make informed decisions about when to take shortcuts.
My Philosophy

Disclaimer: Don't actually do anything I just said. Unless you really want to. Then it's on you.
